Do You Need a Primer?

In general, TotalRoof Coatings will adhere to your roof without the need of a primer.

However, there are some situations where you do need to apply a primer to achieve optimal coating performance. Use the table below to determine whether or not you need a primer for your roof:

Aged Asphalt Bleed-Block Primer necessary only to prevent yellowing of coating due to bleed-through.
Campers Apply Single-Ply Primer only if you have poor adhesion. More commonly required on roofs less than 5 years old.
Concrete No primer required.
EPDM Apply EPDM Rinsable primer only if you have poor adhesion.
Granulated Cap Sheet Bleed-Block Primer necessary only to prevent yellowing of coating due to bleed-through.
Hypalon Apply Single-Ply Primer only if you have poor adhesion. More commonly required on roofs less than 5 years old.
Metal Roof Panel No primer required unless you have rust spots, then apply Bleed-Block Primer to rusted areas.
Modified Bitumen Bleed-Block Primer necessary only to prevent yellowing of coating due to bleed-through.
PVC Apply Single-Ply Primer only if you have poor adhesion. More commonly required on roofs less than 5 years old.
Silicone Coated Roof No primer required.
Skylight No primer required.
Smooth BUR Bleed-Block Primer necessary only to prevent yellowing of coating due to bleed-through.
SPF No primer required.
TPO Apply Single-Ply Primer only if you have poor adhesion. More commonly required on roofs less than 5 years old.
